Wintzell’s Oyster Eating Contest

Plate of Winzell's Oysters

Plate of Winzell's Oysters

How many raw oysters can you eat? Well recently Wintzell’s Oyster Houses old record of 403 was surpassed by Ken Orndoff when he ate 421 on September 11th, 2010. It took a heroic (and since I am trying to keep this blog appetizing) unmentionable effort to do this. If you want all the gory details you can go to the story here. The contest is still ongoing and anyone is welcome to attempt it.

CHALLENGE:
Eat as many oysters in 1 hour as you can. Current record is 421.

LOCATION:
Wintzell’s Oyster House
12 Locations in Alabama and Florida

COST:
You pay for the oysters you eat.

PRIZE:
Beat the record and the meal is free, plus a $25.00 prize and you get your name added to a sign listing the top oyster eaters.

OTHER:
No reservations are required but they do appreciate some notice so their fresh oyster shuckers can be prepared for you.
The contest has been in existence since the 1960’s and approximately a dozen men and women have held the title.
